Plot summary
In the Great Valley, the Day of the Flyers is coming, the yearly exhibition in which the young flyers must prove they can fly with the adults. Petrie, a nervous pterodactyl, finds it hard to stay in formation with his brothers and sisters, and his own way of flying does not help. Littlefoot and his friends meet a strange newcomer and try to work out what he is; the creature, named Guido, is a Microraptor. Cera has worries of her own: her father is grumpy, and he and his new mate, Tria, are preparing for a hatchling to join the family. The baby will be Cera's sister, and she is named Tricia.

- The Land Before Time XII was the first sequel in the series shot in widescreen and the first shot in high definition, yet the Region 1 DVD came out in full screen, cropping the left and right of the image while staying centered rather than pan and scan.
- To promote the film, the music video for its song Flip, Flap and Fly was shown before early theatrical screenings of Curious George and later screenings of The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, then placed among the opening previews of the Narnia DVD and PollyWorld.
- The Land Before Time XII was the final film role of Kenneth Mars, who retired in 2008 and died in 2011.
