Plot summary
Unoshin Mizuno is nineteen and in love with his childhood sweetheart Onobu, but the difference in their classes makes marriage nearly impossible. To raise his standing and help his poor family, he enters the Ohoku, the inner chambers of the shogun's castle, joining three thousand men who compete for the female shogun's notice. The men he meets there are beautiful, ambitious and scheming. Japan itself has been changed by a mysterious epidemic that struck in 1716 and left the male population at a quarter of its former size; women hold the dominant roles now, and men are valued for their ability to father children. When the seventh shogun, Tokugawa, passes away, Yoshimune Tokugawa takes the throne and enters the Ohoku.
