Plot summary
Scott Carlin, 24, dropped out of high school and lives on Staten Island with his mother Margie. His sister Claire is preparing to leave for college. His father Stan, a firefighter, died fighting a fire when Scott was seven, and the loss still shapes him. He smokes marijuana, has Crohn's disease and ADD, and drifts between his friends. Kelsey, a childhood friend he sleeps with, wants a real relationship, while Scott avoids commitment and doubts he is good enough for her. Tattoo art is his ambition, though the work he practices on his friends is uneven. At the beach, nine-year-old Harold asks Scott for a tattoo and runs off after one line. Harold's father Ray later appears at the house, furious, but finds himself drawn to Margie.
