Plot summary
Paco el Bajo and his wife Régula live and work on the country estate of an absent marchioness in 1960s Extremadura, at the bottom of a strict hierarchy. Their elder daughter Nieves is a maid in the big house, their son Quirce serves in the military, and their youngest child, severely handicapped, stays in a crib. Régula's brother Azarías, who is mentally handicapped and was dismissed from another estate, comes to live with the family, and he loves birds. The estate manager Don Pedro and his wife Doña Pura stand above them, and the marchioness's son, Señorito Iván, arrives for hunting parties. Nieves and Quirce look for a better life than their parents accept.
