Plot summary
Rachel is eighteen and has just graduated from high school. After a night out with her boyfriend Jason, he ends their relationship because both are headed to college. She returns home to a scolding from her father, who is leaving on a business trip. He tells her a new employee at his company will stay in the family's guest house. Amy arrives, and Rachel shows her around. Rachel plays a song on the piano and says the guest house was once her mother's art studio; her mother died of cancer. Over wine, they discuss love and relationships. Rachel mentions Jason and her plan to attend college in New York. Amy admits she has never been at ease with men or with anyone. On a day out together, Amy tells Rachel she thinks she is cute.

- Madeline Merritt originally read for the role of Rachel in The Guest House before being cast as Amy; neither she nor co-star Ruth Reynolds had played a lesbian character on screen before the film, though Merritt had played one on stage in Boston Marriage at university.
- Ruth Reynolds and Madeline Merritt became friends while filming The Guest House, and Reynolds said their on-set experience mirrored their characters': the two actresses, considered straight, found it "kind of cool" to discover how comfortable it was to be with someone of the same gender.
