Plot summary
On the Paridier farm in central France, Hortense Sandrail is left to run things when her sons Georges and Constant and her son-in-law Clovis go off to fight. Her daughter Solange lives there as well, though she works mostly in the house. Come harvest, Hortense wants a farmhand, but no man can be hired, so the mayor recommends Francine Riant, a young woman raised in an orphanage. Hortense agrees to take her on, and the girl proves respectful, well-mannered and ready for any task, so the three women keep the work going. Georges then comes back on leave and falls in love with Francine.
