Plot summary
In an asylum, Jake Kimble is kept in a locked room after repeated escape attempts, and the doctor treating him puts no stock in his talk of a long-haired woman in white. Word of his case reaches Tokyo, and Kayako's younger sister Naoko flies to Chicago, where the apartment building Jake came from is being renovated. Only a few tenants remain, among them Max, the building's super, and his sisters Lisa and Rose. Naoko moves in and tells them the curse lives in the apartment, and that it can be lifted by a ceremony. Lisa wants nothing to do with it.

- Takako Fuji and Ohga Tanaka, who played Kayako and Toshio in the earlier Grudge films, passed on reprising their roles, so The Grudge 3 put out a casting call for new actors to play the two ghosts.
