Plot summary

Japan, the early 1930s. The command of the Imperial Japanese Navy decides to build the biggest battleship in the world, the Yamato. Vice Admiral Tadamichi Hirayama is the designer of the ship and puts the proposal forward. Admirals Yamamoto Isoroku and Osami Nagano favor aircraft carriers and want the plan stopped, so they bring in Tadashi Kai, a mathematics prodigy, to pick it apart. Kai works from copied blueprints, calculations drawn from the older battleship Nagato, and purchasing records he gathers through contacts of his own. Comparing the official cost of the new ship with the figures, he finds the two do not agree.
