Plot summary
Mike Hammer has not worked a case in seven years. Since his assistant Velda disappeared he has been drinking, and he now lives on the streets. Capt. Pat Chambers, his old police friend, asks for his help: a senator has been murdered. Hammer is needed because Richie Cole, a dying sailor, refuses to speak with anyone else. Federal agent Art Rickerby says the same gun that killed a politician was used on Richie, and that Richie is an undercover federal agent. Hammer's search brings him to Laura Knapp, widow of the murdered senator, who is beautiful and seductive. Chambers and Hammer were once in love with the same woman, Velda, which ended their friendship.
