Plot summary
After her father's death, Marfa has a cow and a small piece of land that is difficult to manage. To earn at least a small income, she asks a rich kulak for help, since she needs a horse to till her field. The man does not listen to her. In her despair she wonders if there is another path to a productive farm.

- Eisenstein broke off The General Line to shoot October: Ten Days That Shook the World for the 10th anniversary of the Revolution. By the time he returned, Leon Trotsky had fallen from grace and Party attitudes had shifted, so the film was hastily re-edited and sent out in 1929 as The Old and the New.
- Eisenstein first looked for a professional actress to play the lead, but every candidate answered no when asked at casting whether she could milk cows, plough or guide a tractor. He gave the part to farm worker Martha Lapkina, who had never starred in a film.
