Plot summary
Farmers in North America say company-owned genes turned up in their fields without their planting them, and that they are held legally responsible. The documentary travels from Saskatchewan in Canada to Oaxaca in Mexico, gathering scientists, policy analysts and advocates from groups such as Greenpeace and the Center for Food Safety. It argues against patenting living organisms, describes traditional farming practices disappearing, and warns that monoculture and shrinking biological diversity leave the food supply exposed. Lawsuits brought by the Monsanto Company against farmers are reported, along with Mexican corn varieties displaced by subsidized American corn. Organic and sustainable agriculture is offered as an alternative.
