Plot summary
Max is an orphan in Switzerland who loves to play the accordion. A minister places him with the Bösiger family, who work a mountain farm, in exchange for a basket of food. The farmer and his wife set him to work as a servant, though they feed him and send him to school, and their son Jakob bullies him. Berteli, another foster child, arrives at the farm and cries at the table because she misses her mother, so the farmer's wife gives her chocolate.
