Plot summary

Willard Bean was a former world middleweight boxing champion when he married Rebecca. In 1915 church president Joseph F. Smith called them to the Eastern States Mission for five years, and their assignment was Palmyra, New York, to look after a farm and home the church had bought there, including the Sacred Grove, and to buy the Hill Cumorah if they could. The size of the task made them hesitate, but they accepted. Palmyra had driven out its last Mormons eighty years before, and its merchants will not sell the Beans goods. With a baby on the way, Rebecca can find no midwife in town willing to help. Willard calls on the two men who own the Hill Cumorah; one demands a price out of reach and the other sends him away with a shotgun.
