Plot summary
On the eve of Perestroika, Soviet trainers school potential spies in a town built to pass for Indian Springs, Nebraska, where residents live as Americans so cadets can learn to fit in. Bob Smith, a KGB agent who trains them, thinks the work falls short because the town has not changed since the 1950s. He hires Travis and Wendell, two New York club-goers who want a club of their own, to teach the place modern ways, presenting the job as a nightclub opening. The pair are drugged on the way and wake up in Russia, not realizing they have left the United States. They find the town quaint, are dismayed by the 1950s-style tiki lounge Smith has arranged for them, and start remodeling it while making friends and dating two trainees, Bonnie Grant and Jill.
