Plot summary
An American priest in Mexico, Father Peter Williams, is viewed as a holy man by many of his parishioners. In 2003, he is asked to cast out a demon from a young woman named Magali Velasquez, but the rite goes wrong and the demon briefly takes control of him. He continues his ministry and spends years helping people in a small Mexican community, yet the failed exorcism leaves him with a secret that troubles him. Eighteen years later, children in the town begin falling ill with a mysterious sickness. At the same time, a young woman named Esperanza, locked up in a nearby prison, starts showing violent signs of being possessed. He is asked to carry out an exorcism, but the situation stirs his old fears. He asks Father Michael Lewis, an experienced exorcist, to help him face the threat.
