Plot summary
Michael Farr teaches in the seaside town of Cobh and lives there with his two children. His wife died two years earlier, and he is still getting used to life without her. His elderly father-in-law lies close to death in a nursing home, and Michael has begun to experience strange occurrences that seem tied to the old man. Volunteering at the festival, he is given the job of looking after Lena, who writes ghost stories. Having found her fiction remarkably realistic, he tells her what he has been experiencing. A novelist named Nicholas Holden, married and with a scandalous reputation, comes to town for the festival, hoping to revive a brief affair with Lena from a year before, and he and Michael clash over her affections.
