Plot summary
Aaron Fallon, the only surviving member of his family, sets out in the 1870s on a sea voyage that ends in disaster. The ship's captain is the other apparent survivor, and the two of them hear a woman passenger scream before they find her body, savaged by an unknown animal. Nearby stands a crumbling castle whose master, Count Lorente de Sade, speaks with a spirit and keeps a collection of horrid animals. Mantis, the Count's manservant, lives there with Cassandra, who once worked as a nurse, the mute servant Ann, and the Count's wife, said to be leprous and kept in a dungeon. The Count mistakes the captain for a pirate, and Fallon remains a prisoner in the castle.
