Plot summary
Pierre Hunter comes home to his small town in the Driftless Area after his parents die and tends bar. On the road back he accepts a ride from Shane, who charges him twenty dollars, then puts him out and keeps the rosebush Pierre was carrying. Pierre throws a rock at the car, Shane crashes on the next curve, and Pierre finds a bag holding seventy-seven thousand dollars in the wreck. He wants to give the money to the woman who gave him the rock, who has told him she could only pay for surgery on her scarred face if she found a pile of money. Stella pulls Pierre from a well, and he falls for her.
