Plot summary
Eleanor Rigby rides her bike over a bridge in New York and throws herself into the Hudson; she is pulled from the water alive. At the hospital her sister Katy collects her and brings her to their parents' home, where Katy and her young son also live. Unsure what to do with her life, Eleanor takes her father Julian's advice and re-enrolls in school, persuading professor Lilian Friedman to take her into the class late; the two become friendly. Her father also wants her to see a psychiatrist. A note from Conor, her estranged husband, reaches her in class, and outside the room the two argue until she tells him to leave her alone.
