Plot summary
Alan Feinstone is a successful Los Angeles dentist who suffers from extreme obsessive-compulsive disorder and a need for cleanliness. On his wedding anniversary, he discovers his wife Brooke is having an affair with their poolman, Matt. He follows Matt to the home of Brooke's friend Paula, where he invents a story about a surprise party to get Matt invited inside. A dog attacks Alan, and he shoots it to protect himself. Afterward, he drives to his dental practice.

- Chevy Chase and Bruce Campbell were both considered for the role of Dr. Alan Feinstone in The Dentist before Corbin Bernsen was cast in the part instead.
- The film's low budget meant Brian Yuzna gave his own car to the production and handed his credit card to the art department, which bought furniture to use as props during shooting.
- The Dentist began as Brent V. Friedman's script about an alien orthodontist, which producer Mark Amin rejected: he wanted no fantastical elements, only the fear of sitting in a dental chair.
- Corbin Bernsen said playing Dr. Alan Feinstone was not something he could switch on and off: he was not pleasant to be around, argued with Brian Yuzna about it, and had veins popping out of his head.
- Paula Roberts' dead dog was played by a taxidermic goat whose head was turned so its horns would not show, and which was stuffed with fake blood.
- For the effect where Alan clamps Marvin Goldblum's mouth open unnaturally, the team used a prosthetic mouth, tongue and jaw, crafted by Ken Rex, that hid Earl Boen's chin.
