Plot summary
Margaret Hall lives with her three children and her elderly father-in-law in a house on the lake at Tahoe, running the household while her husband, a Navy pilot, serves aboard an aircraft carrier. Her son Beau is a high school senior who has been having an affair with Darby Reese, a thirty-year-old nightclub owner from Reno. Margaret goes to Reese's club, The Deep End, and demands that he leave her son alone. Reese asks her for $5,000. Early one morning after that, Margaret finds Reese's body on the beach below the house, and, fearing what will happen to Beau, she takes the body away and leaves it in a cove.
