Plot summary
Robert Forrester, an aeronautics designer, moves from New York City to a small town in Pennsylvania while his marriage to Nickie Grace is ending. He has been diagnosed with a bout of depression and has trouble socializing. At night he watches Jenny Thierolf through the windows of her isolated house, drawn to the quiet order of her life rather than to the woman herself. When Jenny finds him in her yard, she invites him in to talk. She breaks off her engagement to Greg Wyncoop, convinced that meeting Robert was fate, and her friends take Greg's side. Robert tells Jenny he has been promoted and will move to Philadelphia, so a relationship between them is impossible.
