Plot summary
The Permanent Assurance Company is a staid London firm staffed by elderly clerks who have lately come under the control of the Very Big Corporation of America and its much younger executives. When one of the clerks is sacked without cause, the rest rise up. They shut the remaining supervisors in the safe and hold them hostage, make their boss walk a makeshift plank out a window, and take the Edwardian office building for themselves. It weighs anchor, its scaffolding and tarpaulins become sails, and the clerks put out from the City of London as pirates, bound for another financial center.
