Plot summary
The commander of a cavalry patrol is badly wounded, and the doctor traveling with the column, Robert MacClaw, is the highest-ranking officer still on his feet. The dying man asks MacClaw to bring the surviving troopers back to the fort. Along the route the cavalrymen ride into a town where Col. Janeway and two companies of infantry have stopped to rest while they escort a wagon train of settlers. Once the colonel hears that cavalry is on hand, he puts the troop under his orders and assigns it to screen the infantry column and the wagons. The Indians keep attacking the wagon train, and the cavalrymen are drawn into several encounters with them.

- The Command was shot in Vistarama, but by agreement with 20th Century Fox it was released as Warner Bros.' first film in CinemaScope, and it was the first Western billed as being in CinemaScope.
- The Command was originally due to star Gary Cooper, and at that early stage the production was being made under the title Rear Guard.
- Warner Bros. announced a deal with Zeiss Opton to produce lenses for the studio, but The Command was the only Warner Bros. film ever to use them.
