Plot summary

Jeremy Spensser is a scientist whose heat-sensing device has changed factory automation, and the newspapers report that he has won the International Peace Prize. His wife Anne and their son Billy travel home with him to New York, where his father William, a brain surgeon, waits at the airport. There Jeremy runs after Billy's toy airplane and is struck by a truck. William is unwilling to let his son's mind be lost. He revives the brain and, with the help of his other son Henry, has a mechanical body built to hold it. The two keep the huge figure hidden in the laboratory, where Jeremy works on the new food sources he had begun before.
