Ross Martin
Biography
Ross Martin was an American actor whose career spanned radio, stage, film, television, and voice work. Born in Poland and raised in New York City, he studied law before turning to acting, working with Bernie West in a comedy team and appearing on radio and live television. His Broadway debut came in 1953 with Hazel Flagg. His early films included Conquest of Space (1955) and The Colossus of New York (1958). Blake Edwards cast him as the comic sidekick Andamo in Mr. Lucky and the villainous Baron Rolfe Von Stuppe in The Great Race (1965). For Experiment in Terror (1962), he received a Golden Globe nomination. He became best known as Artemus Gordon in the CBS Western The Wild Wild West, which ran from 1965 to 1969, and earned an Emmy nomination for its final season. Later he did voice work, guest television roles, and directing, and reprised Artemus Gordon in two television movies before his death in 1981.

Martin created most of his own disguises for The Wild Wild West, and the cast often did not know his appearance until filming.
Languages
Before he learned English, Martin already spoke Polish, Yiddish, and some Russian. He went on to add French, Spanish, and Italian to the languages he knew.
Behind the camera
Martin guest starred in a 1971 episode of Love, American Style, and he also directed that episode. He also appeared in the 1971 Columbo episode "Suitable for Framing" as Dale Kingston, a murderous art critic.
