Plot summary
A class of 25 pupils aged 14 and 15 meets daily for French with François Marin at a school in a working-class district of Paris, where many residents were born overseas. A loner, he keeps a narrow line between discipline and cooperation. Differences in dress, bearing, knowledge and diligence divide the class from the start, and a grammar dispute leads one pupil to ask whether he is gay. Asked to read The Diary of Anne Frank aloud, Khoumba refuses, calling the book irrelevant to her life.
