Plot summary
In late 1970s England, Jack shares a prefab house with his older sister Julie, his younger sister Sue, his little brother Tom and their parents. Their father dies of a heart attack while the family unloads bags of cement bought for the garden path. Months later their mother falls ill and stays in bed, and Jack and Julie take on the running of the house. When her illness worsens, she tells them she must spend a couple of months in a hospital, and makes them promise to tell nobody, since the authorities would otherwise put the children into care and demolish the house. She dies at home, and Jack and Julie seal her body in a sarcophagus of the leftover cement in the basement.
