Plot summary
An artist at his easel draws a face, and its mouth begins to move on the canvas. He rubs the mouth out, then finds it living in the palm of his hand. He experiments with the hand, sleeps, and wakes to press the mouth against the lips of an unfinished statue of a woman. The statue comes to life and urges him to pass through a mirror, telling him it is the only way out. He steps through the glass and arrives at a hotel, where he peers through keyholes and sees a hermaphrodite and an opium smoker in the rooms beyond.

SPOILER
Cocteau invited his financier Charles, Vicomte de Noailles, his wife Marie-Laure and their friends to appear in the film as a theatre party. Horrified to find they were applauding a card game that ended in a suicide, they refused to let Cocteau release it, so he re-shot the scene with the female impersonator Barbette and some extras.- Rumours that The Blood of a Poet carried an anti-Christian message, together with the riotous reception of the other Noailles-funded film L'Âge d'or, got Charles de Noailles expelled from the Jockey-Club de Paris and threatened with excommunication, delaying the film's release by more than a year.
