Plot summary
The crew of a French frigate named the Alliance cannot free their ship after it runs aground near Senegal in June 1816. There are not enough boats for everyone on board, so a raft is built for the 147 soldiers, sailors, passengers and officers left over, and the boats are meant to tow it to shore. Fear spreads through the convoy, the tow rope parts, and the raft drifts into the open sea. On board, Savigny, a medical officer, and Thomas, a private sailor, face each other with different attitudes to survival. For the men on the raft, a harsh struggle for life begins.
