Plot summary
Frida is six years old when her mother dies, and she leaves Barcelona for the Catalan countryside, where her uncle Esteve and aunt Marga raise her alongside their three-year-old daughter, Anna. The farmhouse, the woods around it and the animals are all new to a girl from the city, and so is the role of older sister. Frida keeps a spot in the forest where she leaves gifts for her mother, and she struggles to fit in with the children of the town. In town, Marga introduces her to acquaintances, who ask about her mother's illness.

Carla Simón, who wrote and directed Summer 1993, based Frida's story on her own childhood: her mother died of AIDS when Simón was six, and she went to live with her aunt, uncle and cousin on her mother's side. Simón said the film helped her come to terms with her past.- Simón built many scenes from photographs of her own childhood: Frida and Anna climbing a tree, the two of them in the bathtub, Frida painting her face with makeup, the girls washing their dresses, and Marga, Esteve, Frida and Anna together in bed.
- Many of the film's scenes were shot in the same town in which Carla Simón grew up with her aunt, uncle and cousin.
