Plot summary

Tales in a Mexican town tell of cattle and farmers vanishing at Hollow Mountain, where a curse is said to live and the swamp below it is said to claim anyone who approaches. Jimmy Ryan, an American cowboy, raises cattle there with his business partner Felipe Sanchez. When cows go missing, Jimmy takes Felipe and their worker Manuel to the area to look, and Felipe sinks into a quicksand pit before Jimmy pulls him out with his lasso. The three find one drowned cow. Manuel blames the curse, but Jimmy and Felipe are not convinced. The ranch hands quit in fear, and Jimmy hires Pancho and his son Panchito. Enrique Rios, engaged to Sarita, Don Pedro's daughter, demands that Jimmy leave the country.

Willis O'Brien's original idea for the film was first written as a script called The Valley of the Mists, which he never managed to get made; after his death it was filmed as The Valley of Gwangi (1969), with effects by Ray Harryhausen.
A Spanish-language version of the film was shot at the same time as the English-language one and released in Mexico under the title La bestia de la montaña.
