Trailer

Plot summary

Antonio Bonocore looks after an apartment building in Rome and lives there with his German wife, Marlene. When Andrea, an elderly tenant who once worked for the Bank of Italy, is dying, he hands Bonocore a suitcase holding the original plates for the 10,000-lira note and the watermarked paper to print it, and asks him to throw everything into the river. Bonocore is short of money and has already refused to join Casoria, the building's new administrator, in fraudulent dealings, which leaves him threatened with dismissal. He keeps the suitcase instead, and because he knows nothing about printing, he turns to Giuseppe Lo Turco, a typographer, and to the painter Cardone, both in difficulties, to produce the notes. Bonocore's eldest son, Michele, is a revenue officer newly transferred to Rome.
