Plot summary
Eduardo Scarpetta works in the comic theater of early 20th-century Naples as an actor and a playwright. His earnings support an extended family, and among those who depend on them is his son Eduardo De Filippo. Scarpetta stages a parody of The Daughter of Iorio, the play Gabriele D'Annunzio wrote in 1904. D'Annunzio sues him over the parody. The case goes to court, where Scarpetta's freedom of expression is at stake, together with the economic security of his family.
