Plot summary
Nineteen years after Robert, the man she was to marry, vanished, Louise Elmore still works as the head librarian in Wichita, Kansas, and still looks after Wendell, her abusive father, who uses a wheelchair. After a nervous breakdown and a fire in the library, she resigns and begins training Emily Perkins, the younger woman taking her place. The two become friends. At home, Louise has fantasies about taking revenge on her father.
