Plot summary
Daniel McKovsky has spent thirty years on his own. His mother died giving birth to him and his father never came home from World War II, so Daniel retreated into the backwoods of Central Oregon with a brass telescope. Through the 1950s and 1960s he follows the race between the United States and the Soviet Union to reach the moon, dreaming of becoming an astronaut even though he rarely travels far from home. In 1969 Sandy Allister, a young postal worker, brings a package to his door. Outgoing where he is withdrawn, she catches his enthusiasm for astronomy and for the coming moon landing. Unresolved fears about losing the people close to him keep him from growing closer to Sandy.
