Plot summary
Duddy Kravitz grows up poor in post-war Montreal as the younger son of cab driver Max. His rich uncle Benjy pays for his older brother Lenny to study medicine, and only his grandfather pays him much attention. Duddy takes a summer job waiting tables at a kosher resort hotel in the Laurentians, where he begins a romance with Yvette, a French Canadian hotel employee. On a picnic she shows him a lake. Duddy decides to buy the land around it and develop it, but he is not yet twenty-one and fears the owners will refuse to sell to a Jew, so Yvette acts for him. To raise the money, he hires Friar, a blacklisted director, to film weddings and bar mitzvahs, and asks his father for an introduction to Dingleman, a businessman.
