Plot summary
Yeung Yip, a loyal Song general, and his seven sons are caught at Golden Beach by the Khitan-ruled Liao army, with help from a treacherous Song officer. The general and most of his sons are killed or captured, and only two brothers get away. The sixth son reaches home but cannot settle, and his grief breaks out in tantrums. The fifth son asks to be received as a monk at a monastery on Mount Wutai, and the leaders there judge him too unsettled for the life. Blades are not allowed inside the monastery, so he practices with a plain wooden pole, drawing on his spear training, and works out the eight diagram pole technique.

- Alexander Fu Sheng died in a car accident that also involved his younger brother David Cheung Chin-pang and Wong Yue, before he had finished filming his role. The director then rewrote Fu's parts for Kara Wai's 8th child character.
- Alexander Fu died in a car accident before the filming of The Eight Diagram Pole Fighter was finished. The script was partly re-written after his death, and Fu's character does not appear in the final showdown as originally written.
