Plot summary
The story takes place in San Francisco in 1985, in the early years of the AIDS crisis and shortly after the first effective HIV test was launched. Frankie is an understudy at a contemporary dance company in the city, and he is deeply concerned about the possibility that he has already contracted the disease. Graffiti and speculative news headlines bully him, and he escapes them by walking around with music playing on his bright yellow Walkman. Todd, a veteran dancer at the company, encourages Frankie in his dancing, and their friendship strengthens. The two pursue a sexual relationship while navigating the risks and hopes the disease brings.
