Plot summary
Tambrey "Tammy" Tyree is seventeen and lives with her Grandpa, John Dinwitty, on a houseboat on the Mississippi River at Natchez. She runs barefoot, dreams of life outside the swamp, and talks to her best friend, Nan, a goat. When a small airplane crashes in the swamp, Tammy and her Grandpa go out to see what can be salvaged from the wreck. They find the unconscious pilot, Peter Brent, and help him recover at their home. While he recovers, Tammy falls in love with him.
