Plot summary
Maya Kowalski has complex regional pain syndrome, which a specialist diagnosed after many doctors' appointments. Ketamine treatments eased her pain for a year. In October 2016 the symptoms return, and Jack Kowalski brings her to the emergency room at Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital. The staff there are unfamiliar with the condition and worried about how much ketamine she has received. When Beata Kowalski arrives, the physicians object to how she manages Maya's treatments and begin to doubt the diagnosis. The hospital then contacts child protective services.
