Plot summary

At a 2005 auction in New Orleans, the art dealers Alexander Parish and Robert Simon pay $1,175 for a panel listed as "After Leonardo," the painting that comes to be known as the Salvator Mundi. They suspect it is by a better hand. In New York, the restorer Dianne Modestini cleans away overpainting and finds that a thumb has been repositioned and that the lips are drawn without a line, signs she takes for Leonardo. Her work on the picture continues for years. In 2008 a National Gallery curator, Luke Syson, brings Leonardo experts including Maria Teresa Fiorio and Martin Kemp to examine it, and in 2011 the gallery includes it in an exhibition labeled by Leonardo. Art historians and critics weigh in on the provenance and authenticity of the painting as its price climbs.
