Plot summary
In 1857, near the end of the Tokugawa shogunate, Gennosuke, a lowly foot soldier, kills a counselor of his clan as part of a plot for reform. The clan places a vendetta on him, and Misa, the dead man's daughter, and her fiancé Daizaburo ride after him with other samurai. Gennosuke takes refuge in the mountains with a poor farmer, Gundayu, who makes him a partner in a scheme to steal gold from the shogun's mountain. Bandits and rival poachers work the same slopes, and the shogun's authorities punish the theft with death. There Gennosuke meets Jurota Yamane, a samurai gathering gold with his wife Taka for their own clan.
