Plot summary
Meimei performs as a mermaid in a tank at the Happy Tavern, and a videographer hired to film her act falls for her. She slips away for days at a time. He recounts the story of Mardar, a motorcycle courier and small-time crook who was paid to drive Moudan, the daughter of a wealthy liquor importer, to her aunt's apartment when her father brought home mistresses, and who fell in love with her on those rides. Moudan did not know that Mardar had been drawn into a plan to abduct her. Out of prison years later, Mardar is back in Shanghai and still looking for Moudan. At the Happy Tavern he meets Meimei, and he is certain she is the woman he lost.
