Plot summary
Yan, one of the Ten Kingdoms, has known little but war. When its emperor dies of a battle wound, the succession is unclear: his daughter Fei'er, who would be the first woman to rule Yan; Murong Xuehu, his favorite, a warrior noble in heart but not in blood; and Huba, who has his eye on the throne. Xuehu becomes Fei'er's protector and teaches her to lead as a warrior queen. Huba's followers work for her failure, and when a kidnapping attempt leaves her hurt, a hermit named Duan Lanquan shelters her, treats the wound and shows her a different picture of what a kingdom could be.
