Plot summary

Janiyah Wiltkinson is a single mother who supports Aria, her frequently ill daughter, on a grocery store paycheck. The landlord of her building threatens eviction unless the rent is paid by ten in the morning. On her way out she gives her leftover change to Benny, a wheelchair-using neighbor. At the store, a customer family hurls a glass bottle at her when she will not process a WIC transaction for items that do not qualify, and Richard, her boss, tells her to clean up the mess. A friend who pities her offers money, and she refuses it. Her shift is then interrupted by a call from the school about Aria, and Richard warns that she has thirty minutes to come back or lose her job; he also refuses to hand over her paycheck.
