Plot summary
In 1993 a young woman's dismembered body is found in the San Bernardino National Forest. An elderly man is beaten to death in his retirement facility, and a boy named Noah Lafone is found in a bog. The three killings are not linked at first. In July 2010, the Sheridan family is found bound at their dining room table, drained of blood, a symbol painted on the ceiling above them. Detectives Joe Kirby and Lexi Taylor take the case. A woman is killed in her home and her boyfriend's face is burned with a blowtorch, and a man is found in an abandoned swimming pool ringed with barbed wire.

- Stuart Ortiz came up with Strange Harvest after seeing the popularity of Netflix's Tiger King, saying he noticed the public's interest in true crime even when it is absurd and comedic.
- Ortiz named the killer "Mr. Shiny" as a reference to an H.P. Lovecraft character, and also drew on True Detective season one, The Silence of the Lambs, the Zodiac Killer and Stephen King while writing.
- Filming the mockumentary's mixed formats was difficult for Ortiz, who used a large warehouse for the interview segments, where random noise from outside repeatedly interrupted takes and ruined some shots.
