Plot summary
Ted Cogan commands a National Guard unit at a checkpoint in Iraq. A van fails to stop and his men open fire; an Iraqi girl climbs out of the burning vehicle. The van explodes, the unit is attacked, and Ted wakes from a coma two weeks later. He returns to Chicago to his wife Molly and son Max, carrying post-traumatic stress and guilt over the family that died. Then a burned man begins to appear to him, insisting that a wrong be set right. Treatment costs more than he can pay and the government refuses assistance, so he turns to Jake Witzky, a psychic, for help understanding what the burned man wants. His hold on his sanity and his family weakens.
