Plot summary
Harry Monroe works as a waiter and Skip Donahue as a store detective in New York City. Both lose their jobs: cooks at a dinner party mistake Harry's marijuana for oregano, and Skip wrongly accuses a woman of shoplifting. Skip persuades Harry to leave for Hollywood, and the two set out west in a battered camper van. In Arizona, Skip lines up a job for them dressed as woodpeckers, singing and dancing to promote a bank opening. While they rest, two men take their outfits and hold up the bank, and the pair are seized for the crime. A conviction brings 125-year sentences at a maximum-security prison, with advice to be patient until their case is examined.
