Plot summary
In a Buffalo, New York church basement, Mavis Turner teaches tap dancing while Mrs. Fraser accompanies the class on piano. Mavis once hoped to perform on Broadway; now she works to make ends meet and shares her life with a boyfriend whose music career has stalled. Her students are a varied group of women and Geoffrey, a bashful insurance salesman who is the only man among them, and some of them attend for their own amusement, which occasionally sets them against one another. One of the women, Andi, is looking for a way out of a physically abusive marriage. Money is short, and Mavis wants to keep the class going.
